Pediatric Treatment

At Pediatric Therapy Institute our commitment to the whole child has led to searching out the most effective treatment approaches. As with adults, infants and children also benefit from skilled manual therapy. We have added Myofascial Release, Craniosacral Therapy, Visceral Manipulation, High Touch Jin Shin, Quantum Touch, and Healing Touch to the treatment modalities available in addition to traditional Occupational and Physical Therapy. The birth process can place undue stress on the cranial bones and nerves, the brain and soft tissue. Symptoms such as colic, irritability, esophageal reflux, compromised digestive function, torticollis and muscle spasms will often respond to gentle guidance from the therapist's hands.

THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES USED

Myofascial Release (MFR): The body’s fascial system is one continuous web of connective tissue from head to toe. It provides support and flexibility to all structures. Injury, illness, trauma and poor posture can cause the fascial fibers to tighten, shorten, thicken and adhere. This creases a barrier and puts abnormal pressure on nerves, muscles, blood vessels, bones, organs and the brain, resulting in inefficient functioning. MFR, as developed and taught by John Barnes PT, is a gentle hands-on approach used to free up fascial restrictions. The therapist applies sustained pressure into the restriction in a variety of ways, allowing permanent elongation of the tissue. This results in decreased pain, enhanced daily functional abilities, refined athletic performance, increased ease of movement and improved structural balance and integrity.

CranioSacral Therapy (CST): Just as there are rhythms to the cardiac and respiratory systems, there is also a perceivable pulse as the craniosacral fluid is pumped within the dura to hydrate the brain and spinal cord. Restrictions within the system create asymmetries and variations in the speed of this physiologic motion. Dr. John Upledger, DO, the founder of CST, determined that the normal rate in humans is 6-12 cycles per minute and that this rate is often accelerated in individuals with autism and ADHD. While there are many techniques within CST, a common one is to use gentlecompression to create a “still point” where the cranial rhythm shuts down momentarily, and then allow for decompression of the system. During the still point, the neuromuscular system reorganizes itself and the holding patterns change. A new balance is found and structural, emotional and intellectual improvements are often seen.

Visceral Manipulation: French physician Jean-Pierre Barral developed a system of hands-on techniques to release restrictions within the internal organs of the body and the fascia in which they are encased. Again, gentle pressure is applied into the restrictions that are found through manual thermal evaluation. This allows the organ to resume its natural gentle rhythmical motion that indicates healthy functioning. These techniques are helpful for individuals with respiratory system restrictions, and endocrine system imbalances as well as digestive and elimination concerns.

High Touch Jin Shin: Jin Shin is the Japanese system of acupressure that is simplified from the Chinese model. Pressure at specific points along the body’s meridians allows improved energetic flow, and can result in changes in mental clarity, emotional reactivity and decreasing pain.

Quantum Touch/Healing Touch: By working within the child’s electromagnetic field, either in contact with the body or an inch or so above it, the practitioner raises his or her own energetic level to a high frequency of vibration. At first the two systems oscillate at different rates but through resonance the energy transfers from one to the other.  Entrainment is achieved when there is a match in the rhythm and phase. By holding a strong harmonizing energy field, it allows the client’s innate body intelligence to do the work of healing.
